The Catholic Lawyers Association of Western Michigan invites you to its the annual Red Mass on Monday, October 28, 2024, at 5:30 pm at the Cathedral of St. Andrew with dinner to follow at the Cathedral Square Center at 360 Division Ave, Grand Rapids, MI 49503. This year we are honored to have Michael Matheson Miller, the host of the Moral Imagination Podcast and author of the Moral Imagination Substack Newsletter, as our speaker. Miller is the Director and Producer of the award winning documentary, Poverty, Inc. and several video series including the PovertyCure Series The Good Society, and the Gospel of Work. He was the founding director of PovertyCure, which promotes access to justice and entrepreneurial solutions to poverty in the developing world. “The overarching theme” of the Moral Imagination Podcast “is what it means to be a human person and what makes for a meaningful and good life.” The Association will also bestow its St. Thomas More Award on Miller Johnson attorney Bill Fallon. This is a recognition of Bill’s many years of incredible service to the Grand Rapids community and the Catholic Lawyers Association. Please RSVP today for the dinner. The dinner is $95 per person. Bradley Professor of Law at the University of Notre Dame Law School. Professor Bradley teaches legal ethics, criminal law, and constitutional law. He is the co-director of the Natural Law Institute and a co-editor of The American Journal of Jurisprudence, an international forum for legal philosophy. Professor Bradley will be giving a talk titled, “Witnessing to the Truth in a Rootless Age.” Professor Bradley will be helping us navigate our vocations as Catholic lawyers. Our distinguished guest and speaker will be Professor Kevin C. Walsh, an associate professor of law at the University of Richmond. Professor Walsh will speak to us on contemporary issues in religious liberty law. He brings a wealth of experience to the question as Professor Walsh represented the Little Sisters of the Poor in their recent religious liberty litigation. Professor Walsh has an A.B. from Dartmouth College, a M.A. in theology from Notre Dame, and a law degree from Harvard Law School. After law school he clerked for Judge Paul V. Niemeyer on the Fourth Circuit and then for the late-Justice Antonin Scalia on the United States Supreme Court. He has published on questions of federal jurisdiction and constitutional law in The New York University Law Review and the Stanford Law Review. Please RSVP today for the dinner. Sister Veronica will give a talk entitled, “Immigration in America: A Journey of Hope.” She will speak about the vocation of the Catholic lawyer to serve the immigrant and will share stories of her work in Houston.
